Leadership Development for Healthcare Leaders in a Post-Pandemic World

Context – The post-pandemic world presents both opportunities and challenges for the healthcare sector globally. For a pre-eminent Government organization whose mandate is “To ensure the provision of quality health services and to promote healthy lifestyles and environmental practice, the context means capturing positive changes, developing and retaining skilled healthcare workers, and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration, as well as investing in preventative healthcare and wellness.

Objectives – Recognising that great leadership is key for success, the government organization partnered with Hanover to design and facilitate leadership development for a population of its 100 most senior leaders. The objectives were to:

Enhance self-awareness.
Enable participants to better understand and apply their strengths at work.
Help them to identify their development priorities and understand how to close any gaps.
Increase leadership impact at individual and collective levels.

Together, these objectives will help the client to provide even higher levels of patient care whilst maximising the efficiency of operations.

Approach – The Hanover team designed a bespoke, interactive development process that started with each participant completing an externally benchmarked online personality profile and receiving their feedback report.

Leaders then came together in-person in groups of 20 to take part in a one-day workshop. These leveraged the collective experience in the room and enabled participants to learn more about themselves, their leadership styles and impact, and each other.

By linking to the personality profile they had each completed they were able to use a common language to discuss behaviour and share their learning with their own teams. We also explored a group profile with anonymous personality data from all 100 participants – helpful for exploring diversity and inclusion.

Impact – Participants gained valuable insights from their workshop including what they could do differently to further motivate and inspire their teams. They also had greater awareness around how they react to stress or pressure and what this means for their leadership impact, as perceived by others.
The collective impact includes a more self-aware, engaged leadership population that is empowered to balance a focus on people and outcomes. They are also better equipped to articulate and influence the direction in which the client is moving – towards more proactive healthcare and wellness.
Participant feedback is shown on the next page.
